Out of the Closet Issue: Catwoman #39 (2015)
Ah, yes. Everyone’s favorite whip swinging cat. It’s not really a shock to comic book fans to know that Selina has always been written as hypersexual, so when news of her kissing another woman happened, some people were cautious about running away with it. But, the writer herself, Genevieve Valentine, confirmed it herself, providing the end all, be all to the conversation. Valentine continued to flesh out their relationship, validating not only Selina’s complexity as a character (instead of just as a sex symbol), but also focusing on a queer interracial relationship.
The most famous anti-heroine in the DC universe, Selina has expensive tastes, which lead her to her cat burglar career, and interest in bats. Focusing on her modern origin story, Selina Kyle is a professional sex worker and dominatrix, and after seeing Batman in person, decides to become the Catwoman we know and love today.
In another modern origin story, much of her thieving is thought to a response to past abuse, as one of Selina’s pimps kidnapped and abused and possibly raped her sister, Maggie. This, along with seeing Batman, triggered Kyle to kill her pimp and become Catwoman.
